The myth of mobility

Lately I’ve been considering the reality of mobile computing.

As someone who spends in excess of 10 hours per week commuting between Glasgow and Edinburgh, I’m very interested in the possibilities for the productive use of this time.

Indeed, I’m composing this post on an HTC Legend, an Android phone using a WordPress app. This enables me to write blog posts, moderate comments etc on the move.

This is great but is not reflective of all mobile ‘apps’. The wonderful work of the marketing depts of smartphone manufacturers would have you believe that pretty much anything that can be achieved with a desktop computer can now happen ‘on-the-move’ with the simple use of an ‘app’. We’ve all seen those iphone ads on the telly where the subtitle says ‘sequence shortened’, as it shows some task like booking flights happen over a period of seconds.

Not real. My experience of mobility is of weak (or no) mobile signal – far less a 3g one, poor battery life, and the limitations of typing on a touch screen.

Ok, rant over. Any similar/different experiences?

Version 3.0 of WordPress has just been released. You won’t notice the difference from the front-end but, trust me, there are lots of new features.

I’ve just discovered an app to manage my WordPress blogs from my mobile. As I have yet to succumb to the marketing ploys of Apple and HTC etc., I have been required to do a bit of searching for a tool for my Nokia 5800 xpressmusic.

The Wonder of WordPress

I must admit to being a big fan of WordPress. It was initially developed to enable bloggers to get their words and thoughts online quickly and easily. However, over the years it’s uses have diversified (witness these seven weird uses for example), and can now be thought of as a fully featured CMS (content management system) in it’s own right.

Now I confess that I’m not much of a blogger but seeing as how this site has been built using WordPress (which has the added bonus of being free and open-source software), I felt that the first post should be dedicated to it.

Thanks to a fine tutorial on how to integrate WordPress in an existing site, I have started this new blog. I”ll be talking about some of my IT issues with a view to helping others deal with similar situations. I hope you find it useful.

If you’re mystified by the above link, it might help to know that I have coded most of this site myself using a combination of html, css and a wee bit of php. The tutorial provides a method for incorporating a WordPress blog into this (relatively) simple site.

Update 16 July 2009 – Have now made a WordPress template which does the same job as the html did!
